Joey King was thinking outside the kissing booth when it came to husband Steven Piet's first anniversary gift.
In fact, the Uglies star got very creative on their "paper anniversary," during which couples traditionally exchange presents made of the delicate material to signify one year of marriage.
"I found the newspaper one year from the day my husband was born," Joey exclusively revealed to E! News, "which is super cool."
And though the issue had a "really weird" headline, the 25-year-old said it perfectly reflected her and Steven's unique sense of humor.
"I read it and I was like, 'Oh, that’s funny," she shared. "It's a cool thing." (For more from Joey's interview, tune into E! News tonight, Sept. 3, at 11 p.m.)
Joey and Steven, 40, tied the knot in September 2023 during an intimate ceremony at Mallorca, Spain. The couple first met while working together on the 2019's The Act, in which Joey played Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Steven served as director for two episodes of the limited series.
While Steven is not involved in her new film Uglies, he was a familiar sight during the filming of the Netflix movie. As Joey and her costar Brianne Tju explained to E! News, they often included Steven in their hangouts after work.
"We had a lot of girls' times," Joey quipped, recalling how Brianne would come into her and Steven's room "in the morning hungover and we're just debriefing about the night."
She continued, "We had a lot of memories—so many memories and so much fun."
Brianne added, "I just jumped in like, 'Hi, mom and dad! Hang out with me, I’m bored!'"
Also starring Chase Stokes, Laverne Cox and Keith Powers, Uglies centers around a dystopian world in which everyone is considered an "ugly" until undergoing extreme cosmetic surgery. It is based on Scott Westerfeld's 2005 novel of the same name, the first installment in his Uglies book series that includes Pretties, Specials and Extras.
"I loved the books so much growing up," Joey gushed. "I was 11 years old when I first read them and they just stuck with me forever."
Uglies is available to steam on Netflix Sept. 13.
